Buyer Beware

Did you know that toxins leach out of our cleaning products before we even open the bottles causing health issues before we even use them? Don’t believe me? Walk down the cleaning aisle at your local supermarket and tell me you can’t smell those fumes! SO much is hidden beneath the blanketed term of fragrance. In 1976, Congress passed the Toxic Substance Control Act which grandfathered in betweeen 63,000-100,000 chemicals that were on the market . These chemicals were grandfathered in without ANY testing, and are simply UNREGULATED. Today, only about 50% of the chemicals on the market have been subject to any testing at all.

Under this act, manufacturers are protected by trade secret laws, so they do not even have to post what ingredients are in their products. If you go look at a bottle of household cleaner, you may be surprised to see that they only list a small percentage of the ingredients in the bottle. There are SO many ingredients to be aware of due to carcinogens, properties, Alcohol, Aluminum, DEA/TEA, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, TALC, Parabens and more. These are found in so many common household products and should be avoided as much as possible. Like many of you, I used traditional cleaners. I thought, “the tougher the better” for those yucky jobs. But have you checked their ratings on the Think Dirty App? Have you gone onto the EWG website? I hadn’t, and I also hadn’t dabbled with Thieves cleaner. When I began to make more health conscious choices, I went with brands like Method, Mrs. Meyers and others. I thought grocery store products labeled natural were good enough. I was SO wrong.

Here are some ratings I found when I scanned some products at the supermarket. Yes, I went into this aisle just so I could show you what you may want to consider steering clear from. Here goes:

Some good news? I have been able to replace every single one of these products with natural, safe and effective cleaners and personal care items from Young Living. Thieves. I loveeeeeee my Thieves cleaner. I use it to clean just about everything – smells amazing, natural, no harsh chemicals, love it. I keep a spray bottle on the kitchen counter so I can grab it anytime! I've replaced all this and more with just one bottle of Thieves Concentrated Cleaner, some baking soda, vinegar and some castile soap. It's AMAZING.

Today’s challenge? Download this free link so you scan your products too. Here is what I used to use before and their health/safety ratings. Remember, 0 is most safe and clean and 10 is the most toxic.

Start scanning your products and see what you find! If you’re brave, share them with us in the comments below!
